Official company policy for hiring felons

As promised, we contacted Clif Bar to see if they’ll hire former felons. Here’s what they had to say:

“Clif Bar does not automatically disqualify applicants who have been convicted of a felony or have other criminal history. If an applicant receives an offer of employment, then the company will request a background check. If the applicant has a criminal conviction, then the company conducts an individualized assessment to determine whether it will move forward with hiring. The company will consider factors including, for example, the nature and gravity of the criminal history, the amount of time that has passed since any conviction (note the relevant timeframe may depend on the nature of the crime and other factors), the applicant’s rehabilitation efforts, and the nature of the job the applicant is seeking. The company will seek the applicant’s input and give the applicant an opportunity to respond if the company has concerns.”

So the short answer is yes, on a case-by-case basis.

Is Clif Bar on the Ban the Box list?

Are you googling what Ban the Box is? It’s an initiative put together by All of Us or None to remove the checkbox on applications that asks if you’ve been convicted of a crime.

The Fair Chance Business Pledge was started during the Obama Administration to encourage companies to focus on your skills and talents rather than your criminal record.

Clif Bar doesn’t participate in either of these programs, but we already know they’ll hire former felons. We also checked out their online application and they don’t ask if you’ve been convicted of a crime.

Does Clif Bar have special programs for hiring felons?

Clif Bar doesn’t offer any special hiring programs for felons. That’s okay because most companies don’t. However, if you are interested in finding one, contact your local employment office or workforce development agency for further assistance.

  3. Be honest. Their policy says they want to know about your record, so make sure to bring it up. Then tell them why you deserve to be a part of their team.

Clif Bar’s policy says they’ll do a background check before an offer of employment is made.

The truth is that background checks aren’t the same in each state. Where you live will determine what employers see.

Here’s what you need to know about background checks:

Some state background checks won’t show anything seven years old or older. You’re in luck if you live in one of these states:

  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*

Even better, these states don’t care about any not guilty verdicts:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

However, be aware that there are some states that will see your entire record, including any not guilty cases. These are those states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

Drug charges might interfere with any positions where heavy machinery is involved.

But Clif Bar says in their statement that they’ll give you a chance to explain your charges, so don’t be discouraged if you fall into one of these categories!
