Official company policy for hiring felons

We contacted the company to ask about their policy on hiring felons, but didn’t get through. They posted this on their careers page, though:

EEO is the Law

24 Hour Fitness is an “Equal Opportunity Employer”. 24 Hour Fitness does not discriminate in recruitment, hiring or terms or conditions of employment on the basis of race, sex, color, national origin, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, marital status or any other basis prohibited by applicable federal, state, or local law. 24 Hour Fitness also provides reasonable accommodations to disabled individuals to assist in the hiring process and to qualified individuals with disabilities in the performance of essential job functions, as required by applicable federal, state or local law.

City of San Francisco Applicants: 24 Hour Fitness will consider qualified applicants with criminal histories in a manner consistent with the requirements of San Francisco’s Fair Chance Ordinance.

City of Los Angeles Applicants: We will consider for employment all qualified Applicants, including those with Criminal Histories, in a manner consistent with the requirements of applicable state and local laws, including the City of Los Angeles’ Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring Ordinance.

That’s promising!

It looks like they have, but there are barriers. Though there were several reports of felons working there, many also said their records stopped them from getting the job.

Does 24 Hour Fitness hire people with misdemeanors?

Sadly, we can’t answer this question at this time. There just isn’t enough information to point one way or another.

What are the chances of 24 Hour Fitness hiring a felon?

Is 24 Hour Fitness on the Ban the Box list?

24 Hour Fitness isn’t on the Ban the Box list. This is a list of companies that have agreed to remove the checkbox from their applications asking about prior convictions in an effort to hire primarily based on work history and skills. However, we filled out one of their online applications and while there’s no questions asking about your criminal history, you do have to agree to submit to a background check.

They haven’t taken the Fair Chance Business Pledge, either. This pledge states that employers will give convicted felons a second chance in the workforce. Despite that, although as we found out earlier, they comply with the Fair Chance laws of San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Does 24 Hour Fitness have special programs for hiring felons?

24 Hour Fitness doesn’t offer any special hiring programs for felons.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?

Average likelihood of hiring felons

You want to get a job at 24 Hour Fitness with a felony? Well, your odds are average at this time. Your specific charges will play a big part in determining your chances, according to reports. So, while they don’t ask about your criminal history on their job applications, the background check they do might trip you up.

However, the company actively follows fair chance hiring laws in California, so your odds will be even better there.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

The fitness industry is a fun and energizing, so it makes sense they’re looking for upbeat and approachable individuals. They also need people with customer service and fitness backgrounds. From your resume to the interview, you’ve got to show this is you!

On your resume, talk up your passion for helping other people. You can even use yourself as an example here. After all, what bigger transformation is there than who you are now compared to who you were before you had a record.

Show them you know how to persevere against all odds and will work the hardest to achieve your goals. Highlight any sales targets or other trackable goals you’ve achieved, either by yourself or as part of a team. Whether you’re helping someone achieve a fitness goal or trying to hit a performance target, 24 Hour Fitness wants to see you’re the kind of person to get things done.

Another big aspect in landing the job you want is having the right credentials. Lucky for you, gym experience comes from many sources! The yoga classes you attend and the rec league sports team you’re on have given you experience in group fitness. They’ve even taught you a bit about working out.

If you’ve taken it one step further and actually spent time learning how to work out or teach fitness, you are an ideal candidate. Share your certifications and relevant work experience in a way that really gets their attention. What about these things make them important to 24 Hour Fitness?

Show them enough on your resume that they want to ask you about it in the interview!

As always, you’ll need to check out their careers page to find out what jobs are up for grabs at 24 Hour Fitness right now. If you’re looking for a stronger opportunity, get a referral — when someone who already works for the company and is respected suggests another person for a position, they are often listened to.

Does 24 Hour Fitness do background checks?

We see from their application that they will do a background check. You must agree to it at the beginning of the hiring process.

Here’s what you need to know about background checks:

Background checks can vary from state to state. For example, if you live in one of these states, they only go back seven years:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

(* sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.)

And these eight states won’t see any cases where you were found not guilty:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

Be aware, however, if your state is on this next list. They are able to see your entire record, including those not guilty verdicts:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming
