Clif Bar’s policy says they’ll do a background check before an offer of employment is made.
The truth is that background checks aren’t the same in each state. Where you live will determine what employers see.
Here’s what you need to know about background checks:
Some state background checks won’t show anything seven years old or older. You’re in luck if you live in one of these states:
- California
- Colorado*
- Kansas*
- Maryland*
- Massachusetts
- Montana
- Nevada
- New Hampshire*
- New York*
- Texas*
- Washington*
(*sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.)
Even better, these states don’t care about any not guilty verdicts:
- Alaska
- California
- Hawaii
- Indiana (limited check)
- Kentucky
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- New York
However, be aware that there are some states that will see your entire record, including any not guilty cases. These are those states:
- Alabama
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- Connecticut
- DC
- Delaware
- Florida
- Idaho
- Indiana (extensive check)
- Iowa
- Louisiana
- Maine
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Ohio
- Oregon
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Utah
- Vermont
- Virginia
- West Virginia
- Wisconsin
- Wyoming

And because you’ll be working directly with products, theft could pose a problem.
Drug charges might interfere with any positions where heavy machinery is involved.
But Clif Bar says in their statement that they’ll give you a chance to explain your charges, so don’t be discouraged if you fall into one of these categories!
Does Clif Bar hire sex offenders?
