The job application has very clear questions about past convictions and pending charges for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The company wants to hear from you if you have any concerns about your criminal history. This shows they’re interested in helping you overcome your past.

What are some entry-level jobs?

As you can imagine, most entry-level jobs are for drivers. Here is an example:

• OTR (over the road) Flatbed Driver

As an OTR or long-haul Flatbed Driver, you’ll deliver loads across the country. On average, you’ll travel 2,200 to 2,500 miles a week and be on the road from twelve to fourteen days at a time. The pay is good, and you can take along a friend, family member or pet, with a few restrictions.

If you don’t already have a Class-A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A), you can apply to be pre-hired on the condition you finish trucking school. Melton Truck Lines will even reimburse your tuition. If you’re a recent grad from a trucking course, you can also apply for tuition reimbursement.

After you’re hired, there’s a seven-day orientation program. This includes classroom training, a road test and load securement training. Orientation is where you’ll be asked to pass a physical, including a drug and alcohol test.

For the first three weeks, you’ll be driving with a seasoned driver and paid a per diem (daily allowance). Once you get your own truck, you’ll be part of a Driver Development Team for another three weeks. Here, you’ll report to a Driver Manager who’ll help you get used to the job. You will be paid by the mile, with a weekly pay guarantee during the first three months, no matter how many hours worked.

Being a Flatbed Driver is a physical job, with long hours behind the wheel. If you’d like a job that’s both challenging and rewarding, this might be for you.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

You can expect an interview either in-person or over the phone. This is referred to as an ‘integrity’ interview. The company explains this basically means they’ll go over  the information on your application with you.

If you don’t have any trucking experience, tell them why you think you’d like the work and why you think you’d be good at it.
• You may be asked why you’d like to work for Melton Truck Lines specifically. This is where you can tell them you’re focused on finding a good job, with a solid company, to get your life back on track. Yes, they do. The company answers questions about their background checks on Indeed.com, and describes them as “pretty standard”. They stress they want people to be honest. You’re encouraged to call their recruiting department if there is anything in your background you’re worried about.

Melton Truck Lines completes background checks while you’re in driver orientation. So, being upfront about your history will make sure there are no surprises.

Background checks can range from checking your social security number to confirming work history with previous employers to checking your criminal record. You can reasonably expect Melton Truck lines to check your driving record.

Here’s what you need to know about background checks:

Some states don’t even consider information more than seven years old. This means that if your offense was six years ago, you’ll want until next year to apply. This is also great news for former felons living in these states! If your felony conviction was seven years ago, these states won’t even look at them in the check:

Melton Truck Lines has a very good rating, according to glassdoor.com. They’re rated 4.3 out of 5, based on 61 reviews of full-time employees. The highest ratings are for culture and values, career opportunities, and senior management. Ninety-two percent of staff say they’d recommend the company to a friend, while 97% approve of the CEO.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Former felons with driving offenses will have a more difficult time getting a job here. Also, if your felony makes you ineligible to be in certain states or cities, this may impact your chances.

According to the company’s official statement, you must have no more than three moving violations in the last three years. If you have any blood alcohol content (B.A.C.), driving under the  influence (D.U.I.) or driving while impaired (D.W.I.) offenses in the last five years, you’ll not be hired. Additionally, if you have been convicted of a felony within the last five years, you will not be eligible. Once you’ve passed this mandated five year period, you can apply.

Does Melton Truck Lines hire sex offenders?

We’re not sure! The company didn’t make a statement about it to us or online, nor do we have any firsthand accounts of it.

Does Melton Truck Lines drug test?

Yes, the company does drug test. They’re very specific about this. During driver orientation, they’ll do urine and hair follicle tests. They want drivers drug-free for six months.
