We reached out to Mellow Mushroom to ask them if they hire former felons. Unfortunately, their answer was no. They mentioned they mostly hire college students, actually. Now, this doesn’t mean they haven’t hired someone with a felony background before. It just means they don’t think they have and no one has claimed they have.

Has Mellow Mushroom hired felons in the past?

Ban the Box is a campaign to eliminate applications of the checkbox asking if you’ve been convicted of a crime. The Fair Chance Business Pledge is part of this, asking employers to give those convicted of crimes a second chance.

Mellow Mushroom isn’t on the Ban the Box list. However, when we filled out their application, there wasn’t a question asking if we’ve been convicted of a crime.

We think your odds are low because they straight-up told us they don’t hire felons. However, if you have a lesser charge, you may still be able to get an entry-level position.

Mellow Mushroom’s main entry-level positions are pizza baker and server.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

So Mellow Mushroom says they won’t hire felons. But what if they change their minds? Or maybe you just have a misdemeanor charge? In case you want to give it a shot, here are some tips:

Mellow Mushroom is a pizza restaurant so you’ll want to include any restaurant experience, skills or talents you have. For example, have you made pizza before or perhaps ran a cash register? Mention when and where you obtained this experience and these skills, as well, whether at previous jobs, school or even while in prison. You also want to list all previous employers related to the restaurant or food industry. Don’t forget their addresses and phone numbers, if you know them.

Check for any spelling, grammatical or punctuation errors. Enlist the help of a friend. They can read over your resume and application before you hit the send button or take it in to the nearest Mellow Mushroom in person.

You’ve submitted your application and received a call back. Great! But now what? Now, we have some tips to get you through the interview process:

• Be at least 15 minutes early. You want to make a good first impression by showing the company that you know how to be on time.
• How should you dress? You aren’t expected to show up in a suit and tie, but jeans and a t-shirt are a no-no. Shoot for something in the middle like a pair of khakis and a nice button up shirt.
• If you have any visible piercings or tattoos, do your best to hide them or take them out. You can find out the company’s policy on this at the end of the interview.
• You’ll also want to talk about your restaurant experience and any skills or talents mentioned on your resume. Be sure to tell them again where you learned these skills.
• Let the company representative know what you’ve been doing since your release. Talk about any volunteer work or community service you’ve done. If you’ve received any additional schooling or training since you’ve been out of prison, now is the time to let them know. It’s a great opportunity to let the company know you haven’t just been sitting around.

Our sources show that Mellow Mushroom doesn’t do background checks, but keep in mind that most companies will at least verify your identity to ensure you can work for their company.

Company ratings

We did some research and found that on glassdoor.com, Mellow Mushroom has a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars. Employees say it’s a fun, laid-back but still professional working environment. The biggest drawback is the low pay.

What felonies Mellow Mushroom will not hire

Mellow Mushroom didn’t give us a list of the felonies they will not hire you over, but we gave some good guesses on charges we think will cause problems below.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Does Mellow Mushroom hire felons? No, they don’t. But even if you’re able to get an interview, there are some felonies that might make it impossible to get a job at Mellow Mushroom.
