When asked about hiring former felons as drivers, Magnum gave us their requirements. While the list is long, it is specific.

The following criteria must be met to qualify for a position at Magnum Logistics:

  • Must be 25 years of age and have a minimum 2 years verifiable over-the-road experience.
  • Must have a valid CDL license, class A, issued by state of residence, at the time of orientation.
  • No more than 4 moving violations in the preceding 36 months, or 1 accident and 2 moving violations in the preceding 36 months. May have only 3 moving violations, if 1 violation is for speeding of 15 mph over the limit. No moving violation of 20 mph or greater over the speed limit. An accident is equal to two (2) moving violations. Accidents are considered preventable unless proven to be non-preventable.
  • No more than 2 moving violations or 1 accident in the preceding 12 months.
  • No major violations in the preceding 36 months: aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, conviction of a false statement involving a driver license application, fleeing or eluding a police officer, manslaughter resulting from the operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, operating a vehicle while under suspension or revocation, permitting an unlicensed driver to drive, racing or speed contest, physical control intoxication, refusing a chemical test, violation of a railroad crossing, or using a motor vehicle in the commission of a felony.
  • Must not be currently on parole or probation.
  • No DUI, DWI, reckless driving, careless driving, following too close, drug related convictions, leaving the scene of an accident, or a preventable DOT reportable accident involving personal injury or fatality in a CMV.
  • No DUI, DWI, reckless driving, careless driving, following too close, drug related convictions or leaving the scene of an accident in a non-CMV in the preceding 7 years.
  • Must not be addicted to, use, sell, or transport controlled substances of any kind.
  • No violations of the DOT drug and alcohol policy.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT physical examination as required by Section 391.41, and successfully complete and pass pre-employment controlled substance test as required by Section 382.301.
  • Must complete the company orientation.

As you can see, the requirements are mostly based on your driving record. To that end, we have another section in which we will go over what the company looks for in their background check.

While this is not a simple yes or no, this statement from them should give you a good idea for now. If you have a clean driving record, it will earn you a lot of points in their book. Remember, there are other positions besides driver available where your record doesn’t apply. We’ll get into that shortly.

Have they hired felons in the past?

Our research shows that Magnum Logistics has hired former felons in the past. So, as long as you match the above, you stand an alright chance.

Does Magnum Logistics hire people with misdemeanors?

It appears that Magnum Logistics will hire people with misdemeanors. However, there are limitations.

Traffic-related misdemeanors and felonies are considered more serious offenses. Being a trucking company, Magnum Logistics prioritizes candidates with clean driving records.

Fortunately, they allow for four minor traffic violations. Major speeding or intoxication-related offenses will depend on when they occurred.

Will Magnum Logistics hire you with pending charges?

There’s nothing that would stop them from doing this, unless confirmed charges could impact the role you’re applying for.

The Ban the Box movement is an effort to ban questions about criminal records form the application process. Most importantly, this movement gives people with a criminal record the same opportunities as those who don’t have one.

In the eleven states where Ban the Box is law, former felons have an easier time finding work. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t do a background check.

Unfortunately, your criminal record may be factored into the hiring process at Magnum Logistics. The company is not on the ban box list. They also have not signed the Obama-era Fair Chance Business Pledge.

The Fair Chance Business Pledge is a promise businesses make to give felons a fair chance. This pledge does a number of things. For example, it can help former felons get licensed to work. It also asks businesses to make their own pledge to do better.

Essentially, these efforts give employers the chance to see your strengths as a potential employee, rather than just the mistakes of your past.

When you apply to work for Magnum Logistics, you will be asked if you have a criminal record. However, we found the only question on their application asks about convictions from the last three years. This is a really good start if you have a poor driving record.

Does Magnum Logistics have a special program for hiring felons?

Magnum Logistics does not seem to have any special programs for hiring former felons. However, this isn’t to say that you won’t be able to get a job at Magnum Logistics with a felony.

Typically, employment centers have programs to assist former felons in finding a job. So, take a look locally to see what advice they have for you. After all, you never know where your next job will come from!

What are the odds of someone with a felony getting hired?

Based on the information they’ve given us, we think you have high odds.

Let’s start with what might hold you back, though. What is clear is that they are not making a special point of hiring people with criminal records. The lack of programs and Ban the Box policy shows that former felons are not their priority.

That said, it isn’t all bad news. Their application only asks information about convictions that occurred within the past three years, which is promising. We also know they’ve hired felons in the past. Therefore, as long as you’re qualified and your record meets their criteria, you have the same odds as the average person.

Remember to look into other roles if your record will stop you from driving truck.

How to get hired at Magnum Logistics with a felony

What are some entry level jobs?

Hopefully, now you are getting a pretty good idea of how to get hired at Magnum Logistics. But you may still be wondering what sort of positions are available to you.

Unsurprisingly, the main entry-level job here is a truck driver. Hence why a clean driving record and a little bit of experience will go a long way. However, you can also get on-the-job training.

If a career in driving is not an option for you, there are other opportunities available. They also have jobs in logistics, warehouse operation and shipping. While these roles aren’t as dynamic as trucking, they will help you pay your bills. So, make sure you apply!

Entry-level jobs are where you want to start. Even if you have past experience, you may have to take a lower position than you had before your time away. Therefore, apply in the field you’re most interested in and work your way up! The nice thing about entry-level jobs is that you’ll get on-the-job training.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

As we have already said, Magnum Logistics doesn’t go to great lengths to hire felons. Because of this, your chance of getting hired will depend on your strengths as an applicant. Here are some tips to improve your chances:

  • Collecting references, drafting a strong resume and referrals are all good ways to get a job here.
  • Most positions call for a skilled driver. You will want to focus your application around previous driving experience if you can.
  • If you don’t have relevant experience, you can still emphasize your value as a hard worker. If you are comfortable doing so, you can even talk about experiences in prison that helped you grow as a person, and as a worker. Keep in mind that ‘relevant’ experience can come from all sorts of jobs.
  • Since Magnum Logistics will know about your record, it may help to emphasize the positive developments you have made as a result of it.
  • If you are unsure of your resume writing skills, don’t be afraid to look for help. Job placement agencies and writing centers all across the country will help you perfect your application.
  • Once it comes time for the interview, it will be all about how you present yourself. Make eye contact. Be friendly. Remove unconventional piercings. When possible, keep tattoos covered by clothing. These are professional touches expected of any applicant.

Remember, your goal is to make it as hard as possible for them to picture you in prison. While you know you will be a good employee, you have to show them.

This part of the process is not about hiding who you are. It is simply about presenting the version of yourself that an employer would like to see.

Does Magnum Logistics do background checks?

They do. The background check is actually a very important part of their hiring process. However, it is focused on your driving record for the most part.

As mentioned earlier, the company allows four moving violations on your record.

However, they don’t want to see any major vehicle violations (aggravated assault with a vehicle, vehicular manslaughter, DUIs, etc.) within the past three years. They also will not consider applications from candidates with more than one accident in the past year. If you have a recent DUI, serious speeding ticket or major accident that you are responsible for, they will pay attention to that.

Now, if you’re looking for a non-driving job, you won’t need to worry about your driving record.

These violations aside, there are states where your record might not come up at all. For example, in the following states, background checks only go back seven years:

Unfortunately, there are also states that will look at everything, even where you were found not guilty. If you live in one of these states, come to the interview prepared to address your entire record:

So, to summarize: does Magnum Logistics do background checks? Yes, but some violations will be more strongly considered than others.

On, we found that the company has a 3.5 out of 5 employee satisfaction score. That’s not bad for a trucking company.

In general, former employees are lukewarm about most aspects of the company. This includes pay, company culture and opportunity for advancement. However, when you’re someone with a record, these kinds of concerns are much smaller compared to getting hired in the first place. Keep that in mind when you apply.

What felonies Magnum Logistics will not hire

There’s nothing stated online about this, and the company didn’t tell us if there’s a specific confirmed charge that would stop someone from getting the job.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Does Magnum Logistics hire felons? The answer is yes, but certain felonies may be a turn-off for them. Naturally, they don’t like felonies involving driving. If your record includes the following felonies, you may have a hard time getting hired here:

  •         Vehicular Manslaughter
  •         Assault Involving a Motor Vehicle

However, you can always apply to other positions in the office, warehouse or shop if your driving record disqualifies you from trucking jobs. Think outside the box! In fact, you may find you prefer these other jobs.

Does Magnum Logistics hire sex offenders?

The company didn’t tell us whether they will hire sex offenders or not, and we didn’t find anything online about it from former or current employees. We’re not sure!

Does Magnum Logistics drug test?

It looks like they do. As a trucking company, sobriety is obviously important to them. Magnum Logistics is looking for candidates they can trust to handle their vehicles. Because of that, they take drug testing seriously.

It’s important you do, too. Wait until you know you’ll pass a drug test before applying. Even better, use this as an opportunity to get clean. Remember, your past is your past.
