What are the chances of Freedom Oil and Gas hiring a felon?

Is Freedom Oil and Gas on the Ban the Box list?

As more people become aware of the issues former felons face in finding a job, the more support groups are being formed. For example: The Ban the Box campaign is a group that convinces employers to remove all questions regarding previous convictions from their applications. By getting them to agree to remove these questions, former felons can be looked at like any other individual applying. It forces the employer to look at the applicant’s qualifications and skills instead of their criminal history.

There are also companies that have stepped up and volunteered to commit to fair hiring practices for everyone, including individuals with previous convictions. They sign the Fair Chance Business Pledge.

Freedom Oil and Gas wasn’t found to be a supporter of the Ban the Box nor have they signed the Pledge. This is hardly surprising, considering they say they don’t hire felons.

But how do you get a job at Freedom Oil and Gas with a felony? Honestly, that may not be possible from everything we have learned so far. However, let’s keep reading to see what the recommended approach for applying here will be.

What are some entry-level jobs?

Since they’re in the oil and gas industry, an entry-level position and the requirements might look like the following:

  • Greet customers as they enter the store
  • Operating the cash register and credit card machine
  • Cleaning and stocking
  • Customer Service skills will be required since customers will be their main focus.

Does Freedom Oil and Gas hire felons? Nope. But there are tons of other companies in this industry that will. For example, you may not know how to get hired at Freedom Oil & Gas, but you can always check out one of your local gas stations (like 76!) and see if they do.

How to get hired at Freedom Oil  Gas with a felony

Freedom Oil and Gas told us they don’t hire individuals with felony convictions, but there can always be a first time — right? If you have experience in this field of work, here are a few things we would suggest that may help you get your foot in the door:

Research — Research the company to make sure this is a field that you will be qualified in. It’s possible that an individual with skilled experience may have the best chance at getting hired here . . . even with a felony.

Application — Applications can be a bit intimidating — but they don’t have to be! Here are a few pointers to remember when filling out any application.

  1. Make sure you have time set aside to complete the application properly. You don’t want to rush through the application, because rushing can lead to errors.
  2. Take care not to leave anything blank. Putting a simple N/A (not applicable) in a blank lets the employer know that it doesn’t apply to you.
  3. Provide as much information as possible when it comes to past employment. Skills, experience and contact information should be up-to-date.
  4. If you are asked about your criminal history, be honest! Chances are if they’re asking, they are going to conduct a background check anyway.

Resume — You don’t have a resume? That’s okay! We have an entire guide designed just for you. We’ll show you the best ways to include all your skills and experience that relate to the position you’re applying for.

Interview — Interviews can be a bit scary, but if you keep in mind a few things you will be okay.

  1. Remember to smile. A smile makes you memorable in a positive way.
  2. Don’t forget your manners and upbeat personality also can make a lasting impression.
  3. Be honest about your background. This is your chance to explain the circumstances of your record, so take advantage of it! Tell them how you’ve learned and grown from the situation as well. Helping them see the positive side goes a long way.

Make them see that your conviction makes you strive harder to do what it takes to get the job done!

Does Freedom Oil and Gas do background checks?

Does Freedom Oil and Gas do background checks?

Yes, Freedom Oil and Gas told us they do. Here is what they had to say:

Background checks are done and employment is contingent on a clear background check.

Something to keep in mind regarding background checks:

Here are the states that will look at an offense only if it is less than seven years old:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kansas
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New York
  • Texas
  • Washington

There are now some states will only look only at guilty convictions. They are as follows:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

Unfortunately there are states that will still look at everything. Here are those states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

Company ratings didn’t have any information regarding Freedom Oil & Gas. Without any feedback to tell us about the company as a whole, they remain a mystery.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Pretty much all of them. But if you’ve only got a misdemeanor record, do you still have a chance? We were given a little insight on this from their executive assistant, though. Here is what we were told:

“Our industry is highly susceptible to theft and fraud so we have to do all we can to guard against that.”

Knowing this, if your background consists of a theft charge or anything with fraud, your chances of being hired here will probably not be very good.

We would think that they may also frown upon any drug or alcohol conviction since safety is important in this industry.

Does Freedom Oil and Gas drug test?

We weren’t able to find anything that directly touched on this subject. However, we did notice that Freedom Oil & Gas has a strict safety policy. They strive to prevent accidents and injuries. This being said, you should expect a drug screen when applying and more than likely random ones as well.
