Is Circle K on the Ban the Box list?

Ban the Box is a campaign set out to do exactly that: ban the box on employment applications that asks if a person has any prior misdemeanor or felony convictions. The Fair Chance Business Pledge, created during the Obama Administration, says businesses that have signed the Pledge will give former felons a shot at creating a normal life for themselves.

Both the Ban the Box list and Fair Chance Business Pledge allow employers to look at an application based on the applicant’s prior work history and skills before judging them because of a previous offense.

Circle K is not on the Ban the Box list, and that pesky box is included on their application (we checked). They also have not committed to the Fair Chance Business Pledge. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get hired at their company with a felony. It’ll just depend on the particular location and position you’re applying for.

Does Circle K have special programs for hiring felons?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Circle K participates in any special programs for hiring felons. This is likely because receiving an offer of employment is dependent on the individual store managers.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?

Our research at Relaunch Pad gives your odds of getting hired at Circle K with a felony as uncertain. While our attempts to contact the company have gone unanswered and they aren’t on the Ban the Box list, online research shows they’ve hired employees with a criminal past.

What are some entry-level jobs?

At Circle K, the main entry-level positions are in customer service. This will include such duties as greeting customers as they come into the store and up to the counter, running the cash register, and credit card machine, stocking merchandise and general store upkeep.

Starting off as a customer service representative allows you to learn how the store functions, enabling you to move up in the company to assistant store manager, store manager and/or a corporate position.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

We know they’re not on the Ban the Box list, but you’re wondering how do you get a job at Circle K, right? Well, let’s take a look.

Either way, you’ll want to make sure to use proper grammar and punctuation. If you still aren’t confident, go to a local job placement agency and they can assist you further!

The next phase is the interview. Here are a few pointers on how to nail the interview process:

• It’s always advisable to be on time, even early.
• Dress for success. Have clean, wrinkle-free clothes and appropriately styled hair. If you have any tattoos or piercings, try to cover them up or take them out. Company policy on these things can be addressed at the end of the interview.
• Answer all questions honestly. The truth will come out eventually, so it’s best to be upfront about everything.
• Highlight your skills and previous work history. Have you worked at a convenience store in the past? Let them know. Operated a cash drawer and credit card machine? Talk about this. If you haven’t, that’s okay, too! Assure the interviewer that you are willing to train and are up for the challenge.
• Informing the interviewer of any classes, training, volunteering or community service you’ve participated in will also be a great talking point during the interview. This will show that you haven’t been sitting around doing nothing and that you’re working on getting back to a normal life.
• Ask your own questions. If you need a paper and pen to make notes throughout the interview, take them with you. At the end of the interview, speak up. Ask any questions you have about the position or the company. This will show Circle K that you have been paying attention and that you are interested in working for them.

Because we were unable to reach a Circle K representative, there’s no definitive answer to whether or not they do background checks. Most companies do perform a background check at some point during the hiring process though. Online sources show that some Circle K locations will conduct a background check, while other locations do not.

We took the time to check out Circle K’s ratings. On glassdoor.com, Circle K’s rating is 2.7 out of 5 stars. Mixed reviews come from both past and current employees. Many of them say upper management is decent, pay is favorable and hours are flexible. The majority of employees also enjoy the customer interaction experience. Downfalls tend to be about relationships between co-workers and store policies on lunches and breaks.

What felonies Circle K will not hire

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Does Circle K hire felons? It looks like the answer to this is yes, but there are some felonies to be aware of:

• Theft charges may make it difficult when dealing with cash or merchandise
• Identity theft could pose a problem when working with a credit card machine
• Violent or hate crimes could interfere because you will be in direct contact with the general public.

However, this is where being honest and upfront will work to your benefit. Using the interview process as your platform, you will be able to let the company representative know about any prior convictions and the steps you’ve taken to overcome them.

Does Circle K hire sex offenders?

We don’t know. Circle K hasn’t said if they hire sex offenders or not, and online sources are silent on this.

Does Circle K drug test?

We don’t know firsthand if Circle K conducts drug tests. When applying for any position, it’s best to play it safe and move forward as if they do. Nothing good comes from going through the interview process just to fail a drug screen!
