Absolutely. The Avnet rep claimed that after a job offer is extended, they conduct a “suitability screening.” They say this background check happens after the job offer, but before employment.
What to know about background checks:
For some states, seven years is the limit of how far a background check can go. If your felony took place seven or more years ago, it will not be a factor in these states:
- California
- Colorado*
- Kansas*
- Maryland*
- Massachusetts
- Montana
- Nevada
- New Hampshire*
- New York*
- Texas*
- Washington*
(* sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.)
Every bit helps. In certain states, crimes in which you were declared not guilty will not be disclosed on your background check. See them here:
- Alaska
- California
- Hawaii
- Indiana (limited check)
- Kentucky
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- New York
It can’t all be good news. If you live in one of the states below, they’ll look at your entire record. Guilty or not guilty, all charges and convictions will be visible. Keep that in mind when applying in these states:
- Alabama
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- Connecticut
- DC
- Delaware
- Florida
- Idaho
- Indiana (extensive check)
- Iowa
- Louisiana
- Maine
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Ohio
- Oregon
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Utah
- Vermont
- Virginia
- West Virginia
- Wisconsin
- Wyoming

Avnet labels itself a drug-free workplace. People with drug-related charges ranging from possession to trafficking could face an uphill battle getting hired, due to the possibility of working with heavy machinery.
Those with theft related felonies could have a hard time getting hired as well since warehouse workers may work with small, expensive electronic parts.
Does Avnet hire sex offenders?
Avnet didn’t tell us directly, and there are no online accounts of this happening.
Does Avnet drug test?
Avnet’s Code of Conduct lists the company as a drug-free workplace. You can expect a drug screen pre-employment. The Code of Conduct also states the company can and will give drug or alcohol tests to any employees they find suspicious. Refusal to take the test can lead to termination.
