It looks like ADT will perform background checks on their applicants.
However, where you live can have a big impact on what they find.
For example, in some states, ADT will only learn about offenses that occurred in the last seven years. If you live in one of these locations, the background check will be fairly limited:
- California
- Colorado*
- Kansas*
- Maryland*
- Massachusetts
- Montana
- Nevada
- New Hampshire*
- New York*
- Texas*
- Washington*
*States with an asterisk may feature enhanced background checks depending on the pay bracket.
There are also some states that won’t feature any information about crimes you were found not guilty of. This means ADT won’t learn anything about your acquittals in these states:
- Alaska
- California
- Hawaii
- Indiana (limited check)
- Kentucky
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- New York
Finally, there are many states that include your entire background, including offenses you were found not guilty of. If you live in any of these places, ADT will learn everything:
- Alabama
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- Connecticut
- DC
- Delaware
- Florida
- Idaho
- Indiana (extensive check)
- Iowa
- Louisiana
- Maine
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Ohio
- Oregon
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Utah
- Vermont
- Virginia
- West Virginia
- Wisconsin
- Wyoming

What felonies ADT will not hire
You can imagine they’ll have some convictions they can’t overcome when looking at your application. ADT didn’t tell us what they are, so we made our best guesses in the next section.
What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?
Because ADT has many customer service positions, they may be reluctant to hire people with violent or sexual offenses. Similarly, if you’re applying for an installation job, it may hurt your chances if you have a history of substance abuse.
Finally, it is a security company. That means they probably won’t want candidates with a history of theft or burglary.
Does ADT hire sex offenders?
Some of their positions might be a good fit for someone with this kind of background, but there is no information from the company or from past employees.
Does ADT drug test?
Yes.
