If you’re thinking about getting into the insurance industry with a record, you’ve come to the right place. Looking into specific companies and getting the real answers is hard, which is why we’ve gone ahead and found out if Genworth Financial hires felons so you don’t need to putz around anymore.

We did some in-depth research to find out about the company so we could answer the questions that matter to you. Since many of us have felonies ourselves (or have worked with those who do), we have an idea of what you’re looking for.

To that end, we’ll answer the following questions:

  • Does Genworth Financial do background checks?
  • If so, when?
  • What’s the best approach if I have a record?
  • Does Genworth Financial hire people with misdemeanors?
  • What education do I need to work in insurance?

To get these answers, Relaunch Pad takes a personal approach. We contact every company we profile directly to ask about their hiring policies for former offenders. We have done this more than 1,000 times here in the US! We really know what we’re talking about.

Official company policy for hiring felons

We asked Genworth Financial if they hire former felons and they gave us this response:

“As an insurance company, we are in compliance with the current insurance industry standards for hiring people with prior felony convictions.”

This doesn’t say much by  itself, but we believe that they are not very willing to hire felons based on our own online research and our understanding of the insurance industry.

A federal law in 1994 called the Violent Crime and Law Enforcement Act essentially says it’s a federal crime for a person to engage or participate in the business of insurance if that person has ever been convicted of a state or federal felony involving dishonesty or breach of trust (section 1033 A and B, if you’re curious).

Your felony will be a big obstacle to overcome to even get a shot at being considered here. Some crimes will make it simply impossible to get a job here.

Federal law requires that you appeal to the state’s insurance board commissioner and get approval to work in any insurance-related position.

If you believe you have the right stuff and are willing to go through the lengthy process of appealing to the state commissioner where you want to work, then there’s always a chance you’ll get hired.

Has Genworth Financial hired felons in the past?

After extensive research, we found no reason to believe they’ve hired felons before.

Does Genworth Financial hire people with misdemeanors?

Again, referring to the company‘s statement regarding their hiring practices, plus applicable federal laws, it’s uncertain whether they will hire those applicants with less serious offenses on their records, such as misdemeanors. We believe the reality of this happening is very low, however.

Will Genworth Financial hire you with pending charges?

The company might, but they didn’t tell us directly. Considering the industry, the company might prefer your charges be resolved before they hire you.

What are the chances of Genworth Financial hiring a felon?

Is Genworth Financial on the Ban the Box list?

The Ban the Box movement is an initiative by civil rights groups that helps those with criminal records get jobs by removing the check box asking about them on employment applications.

Eleven states have become members of Ban the Box, including: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.

Genworth Financial doesn’t support Ban the Box; their application asks if you have a criminal conviction. This will likely cause your application to be filed as law requires, but you’ll probably never hear back from them.

There are other programs out there Genworth could be involved in. For example, the Fair Chance Business Pledge was brought into the spotlight in 2016 as a call to action for companies in the private sector to eliminate barriers reformed offenders face when trying to re-enter society and need jobs. It won’t come as a surprise that Genworth doesn’t participate in the Pledge, either.

Does Genworth Financial have special programs for hiring felons?

Genworth Financial does not have any special programs aimed at helping those with past criminal records to get a job. There are Federal laws they are bound by which prevent them from doing much with hiring people with criminal histories.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?

Low likelihood of hiring felons

After extensive research, Relaunch Pad concludes that getting a job with Genworth Financial with a criminal record of any sort is low.

Since they’re not on the Ban the Box list and have not taken the Fair Chance Business Pledge, and due to strict laws in this industry, it’s very unlikely you will be able to get a position here.

Also, most insurance companies require their employees get bonded (as well as insured and licensed as an agent). As you know, this makes it incredibly hard to get a job at Genworth Financial with a felony.

It’s possible you’ll have better odds with a misdemeanor. However, according to our research and understanding, the law doesn’t leave much wiggle room in insurance jobs.

What are some entry-level jobs?

Typically, Genworth Financial is looking for people who have worked in or are trained for the insurance industry. You can explore their careers site to see if they have any postings that interest you or for which you’re qualified.

Since a record will bar you from being an insurance agent, you’ll want to look for roles outside of sales. Think of jobs like receptionist or IT where you may have more options as someone with a record.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

Unfortunately, you probably won’t have a chance of getting a job at Genworth Financial with a felony, or any other conviction for that matter. However, if you want to apply anyway — or have found a more felon-friendly role to apply to — here are some tips:

Go to a career counseling center

Sound like work? Good. It’s a really good idea to force yourself to get out of the house and interact professionally with others to get you back in step with the work force. Whether you’re five minutes or five weeks into unemployment, keeping up these habits makes it easier to interview for jobs.

Not only will it help your mental state simply to leave the house and go do something proactive about your career, you will also get real help in your job search. These counselors have their fingers on the pulse of the entry-level job market in your town, so why aren’t you using them? They’ll let you know what companies you have the best chance with.

And they’ll help you with your resume. To get the most bang for your buck, we suggest taking some time out of your day to review our resume guide for former felons so you have a really great starting point to work with them on. Heck, we might even point out some things they don’t!

Prepare to impress

Get a seriously nice, professional outfit. We know they can be painfully expensive to buy, so we’d like to remind you that there are some businesses and charities that offer business attire to people who need more professional clothes for interviews.

Take the time to primp yourself. Personal hygiene, folks! Shower, use deodorant (avoid strong scents), brush your teeth and make sure your hair is all in order. If you show care about your appearance, it shows attention to detail in your interview as well as pride in presentation.

Essentially, you need to look the part you’re applying for. Have you ever seen an insurance commercial? Dress like that. Cover those tattoos, put on that pastel pantsuit and smile your way into a job!

And. . .

Sometimes it pays to look outside the box and see if you can get a job working in the industry through a staffing agency to get some experience first.

Does Genworth Financial do background checks?

We see from their application online that Genworth Financial does do background checks. Most companies perform a background check at some point during the hiring phase, even if it’s only to confirm you can work legally at that company. Genworth Financial does their background check right away, before conducting an interview.

Here’s what you need to know about background checks:

Some states don’t even consider information more than seven years old. So if your offense was six years ago, you’ll want to wait until next year before applying.

If your felony conviction was at least seven years ago, these states won’t even look at them in the check:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

(* sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.)

Even better, these eight states don’t consider court cases were you were found not guilty:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

However, there are still some states that will look at your whole record. This includes your not guilty verdicts. These states, unfortunately, see everything::

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

What felonies Genworth Financial will not hire

There are many convictions (listed below) that will slow your record down, but Genworth didn’t tell us what charges would specifically stand in your way.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Clearly, simply having a criminal record will make it harder for you to get hired at Genworth Financial. However, anything on your record that directly links to the financial sector will get in your way. So if any of the below is on your record, you may want to consider a different company:

  • Theft
  • Fraud
  • Impersonating another person or official
  • Money laundering.
  • Embezzlement
  • Larceny

Does Genworth Financial hire sex offenders?

The company didn’t tell us if they do or not, and we didn’t see anything online about it.

Does Genworth Financial drug test?

While we have no firsthand information on this, our suggestion is to move forward as if they do. It’s better to be safe than sorry if you were to be put in that position.
