Does NCR hire felons?
Official company policy for hiring felons
When we asked NCR about their policy regarding hiring felons, this was their response:
“Please note that everyone is welcome to apply for a position; also, all people, before joining the company, must pass a background check. If the person meets company standards, we are more than glad to continue the cooperation with him/her.”
From this statement, it looks like NCR is open to the idea of hiring those with a record. However, “company standards” could be used to exclude some convictions — we’ll discuss these later in the article, don’t worry!
Have they hired felons in the past?
The representative from NCR did not confirm whether or not they have hired felons in the past. When this happens, we thoroughly search multiple job boards and forums for a response. Our own research, however, did not turn up any information on this subject.
Does NCR hire people with misdemeanors?
While we researched how to get a job at NCR with a felony, we decided to search for cases of them hiring those with misdemeanors. Again, our searches did not turn up any information.
Is NCR on the Ban the Box list?
Ban the Box has made strides over the last decade in encouraging employers to remove all criminal history questions from their application. The Pledge encourages employers to give more opportunities to workers who have a criminal background so they can succeed — just like any other employee.
While NCR is not part of either campaign, they don’t ask about criminal history on their employment application.
Does NCR have any special programs for hiring felons?
When we asked NCR about any programs available for former felons, they said:
“We don’t have any programs for ex-offenders and it all depends on the background check.”
Don’t get discouraged. Go check with your local unemployment office or job placement agency. They usually know of or have programs to help people who have records.
What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?
We think that the chances are uncertain that a person will get a job at NCR with a felony conviction. We base this assessment on the fact that they didn’t say no, but we also can’t confirm if they have or not.
What are some entry-level jobs?
We browsed through the NCR job website to see what kind of entry-level jobs they offer. We found many that require only a GED or high school diploma. There are also some positions that require a college degree or equivalent experience. Among the entry-level positions are:
- Customer Engineers
- Relationship Manager
NCR is technology focused. If you have computer experience, you’ll have an advantage when it comes to gaining employment.
How to get hired at NCR with a felony
When you find some jobs at NCR that you are interested in applying for, you will need to create an online account. The first thing you’ll be asked is if you want to upload your resume. Don’t panic or click “skip”, because we can help! Relaunch Pad created a guide to walk you through the process of building a resume. We know that the experiences of former felons may be a little different than most people, but we can take advantage of that.
First, let’s talk about work experience. Any jobs you’ve held on the outside can be included on your resume, but we also want to think about prison jobs. Most people are required to hold a job in prison.
Did you work in any of the following positions:
- Maintenance crew;
- Kitchen worker;
- Chapel staff;
- Clerk positions; or
- Building maintenance?
Jobs inside prison give you a unique set of skills because you have to work with inmates and prison staff. That’s not an easy task. Those jobs require you to develop communication skills. They also instill a work ethic that can carry over to real-world jobs.
Second, you want to include classes you took in prison. Did you learn a new trade? Did you get your GED or other work certificates? If you did, these should be included on your resume. It doesn’t matter where you learn job skills — it just matters that you learned them in the first place!
Now, let’s get ready for an interview. If you really want to be ready, record yourself answering some common interview questions:
- What experience do you have with technology?
- Why should NCR hire you?
- Where do you see yourself in five years?
You always want to show up to an interview looking your best because first impressions matter. You don’t want their first thought to be, “I bet this person has done time.”
- Check with your area unemployment office, Salvation Army or Goodwill. These types of places usually have cheap or free clothing for former felons to use at their jobs and interviews.
- Before an interview, why not get a fresh haircut? Make sure you brush your teeth and put on deodorant.
- Be confident when you go in. Look the interviewer in the eye and be polite.
This is your chance to sell yourself. You want them to know you’ll be a hard worker. If they ask about your criminal history, be honest and explain that was the past and you’re looking towards the future.
Does NCR do background checks?
NCR confirmed that they do perform background checks on prospective employees.
Here’s what you need to know about background checks:
When it comes to background checks, we want you to know that they differ depending on where you live. For some states, the check only goes back seven years. If you live in the following states and committed an offense six years ago, you may want to wait a short time before applying:
- New Hampshire*
- New York*
*sometimes certain pay or salary bracket positions require one.
There are some states that only show charges that you were found guilty of. If you were found not guilty or some charges were dropped, they won’t show up on background checks in these states:
- New York
Unfortunately, there are still plenty of states where everything shows up. This includes charges you were found guilty of as well as ones you were not guilty of or were dropped. Here is a list of those states:
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
The website glassdoor.com showed us that NCR has a 3.1 out of a possible 5 star rating and 54% of people say they would recommend working there to a friend.
People who work here say they love working with new technology in a fast-paced environment. Many positive comments were made about the work environment and that there is room for advancement within the company. There are also many positions that allow for work to be done from home many days of the week.
The main complaints revolve around management, but we see this with most places. There were some complaints about the pay being low and bad work/life balance.
What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?
At this point you may still be wondering: Does NCR hire felons? We also want to look at some convictions that may prevent a person from getting hired.
NCR is heavily involved in both computer technology and finance. Anyone with theft, breach of trust or computer crimes convictions may have a hard time gaining employment. There are also positions that require workers to drive company vehicles, so anyone with DUI convictions may have trouble gaining employment in these areas.
Does NCR drug test?
We read through NCR’s Code of Conduct for employees. Inside, they make it clear that they are a drug-free workplace and require a drug-screening test for all that apply for employment.
