Official company policy for hiring felons

As promised, we reached out to Lockheed Martin. However, we were unable to make contact. Since we’re waiting to hear back from them, we looked to see what we could uncover about their hiring policies for former felons on our own.

We noticed they pride themselves on being an Equal Opportunity Employer. In fact, they have a section set to the side just for this topic.

With this in mind, let’s keep reading to see what else we uncovered about how to get a job at Lockheed Martin with a felony.

Has Lockheed Martin hired felons in the past?

Unfortunately, Lockheed Martin doesn’t have a strong record for hiring former felons. Our online sources were pretty consistent in saying Lockheed Martin doesn’t hire felons, though a few suggest it’s possible if the record is more than 10 years old. This is mostly because a security clearance is required for a lot of the jobs, but we’ll get into that later, as well as the specific offenses Lockheed Martin says they watch out for most.

Does Lockheed Martin hire people with misdemeanors?

Individuals with lesser offenses have a difficult time finding jobs too. That’s why we made sure to look for anything that touched on this area. For this company, chances are they won’t hire you with a misdemeanor on your record. That said, it might depend on the job — so read on!

Will Lockheed Martin hire you with pending charges?

We’re willing to bet they won’t in most cases. They’re fairly strict in their hiring policies and, unless the charge is for something minor they’re willing to overlook, they’ll probably wait until your charges are resolved.

What are the chances of Lockheed Martin hiring a felon?

Is Lockheed Martin on the Ban the Box list?

Did you know there are groups advocating on your behalf? That’s right, there are. The Ban the Box campaign is a group that supports ex-offenders by persuading employers to remove all questions about criminal histories from their applications. By eliminating these questions, everyone has a fair shot in the job market. If the employer can’t see your background, they can’t toss your application to the side just because of it.

The Fair Chance Business Pledge also helps ex-offenders. Companies dedicated to practicing fair hiring practices for everyone, including those with a criminal record, are signing the Pledge.

As luck would have it, Lockheed Martin doesn’t support either of these programs. But let’s keep digging to see how to get hired at Lockheed Martin with a felony.

Does Lockheed Martin have special programs for hiring felons?

No, they don’t offer these types of programs.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?

What are some entry-level jobs?

Since we know getting a job at Lockheed Martin might be a bit difficult, we found their most entry-level position. These types of jobs ask for the least experience, so they’re a great place to start with a new company! Here’s your safest start at Lockheed Martin:

  • Administrative Assistant — You’ll have basic office duties like: Answering phones, filing, sending emails and scheduling meetings. In order to excel in this role, you’ll need organizational and multitasking skills. And since you’ll be dealing with staff and clients, an upbeat and professional attitude is a must!

Lockheed Martin has several roles that require more experience and security clearance. If you’re interested in one of their more positions, make sure you look over their career listings.

Just in case you’re interested in a job that requires security clearance, here’s a link to the Department of State’s page that deals with the topic.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

We want to make sure you have the best chance at landing the job. Here are a few things to keep in mind when applying:

For starters, you will need a resume. But, a cover letter is optional. We recommend you provide one anyway. A cover letter is a great way to tell them a little about yourself and what you’re capable of.

Your resume needs include all experience that relates to the job you’re applying for. In this case, we’re talking administrative skills — things like your ability to use Word or other office software, as well as manage multiple tasks at once.

If you have any professional experience in an office setting, make sure that is at the top of your work list. Clerical roles from prison would also count here. Those skills transfer over!

If you don’t have a clue how to put together a resume, or you just need some help highlighting your skills, be sure to check out our guide we created just for this purpose.

We understand the interview can be a bit nerve-racking, but it doesn’t have to be. When applying for a company of this size, we suggest:

  • Carefully choose a professional outfit. This goes a long way to being seen in their offices.
  • Remove any piercings and cover your tattoos until you find out their policy.
  • Think before you speak and make sure you speak clearly.
  • Maintain eye contact while interviewing. This lets them know you’re focused and paying attention.
  • Make them aware of your background. Use the opportunity to your advantage and get it out in the open. Remember: Talk up how you spent this time improving yourself!
  • Ask questions about the security clearance required for the majority of their jobs. They may be able to assist you with this — even if you have a felony!

Does Lockheed Martin do background checks?

Yes. You can expect a background check.

Here are some things to keep in mind regarding background checks:

There are several states that will now only look at an offense if it’s less than seven years old. Here is a list of those states:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

(*certain pay or salary bracket positions require a screening.)

The states below don’t look at anything you weren’t convicted of:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

These states will still look at everything:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

Company ratings

Glassdoor.com has Lockheed Martin rated with 3.8 out of 5 stars. This is what we found about how they got their score:

Employees like the many benefits that Lockheed Martin has to offer and say it’s a wonderful place to work. However, since it’s a large company, it isn’t very personal and the pay is only average.

What felonies Lockheed Martin will not hire

Obviously a company that often deals with the government is going to have some stipulations for the convictions they can work with. In this case, there’s a whole document about it you can read here.

From the document:

If OSY receives disqualifying information on a contract employee, the Contractor, upon notification of such, must immediately remove the employee from duties which require access to DOC facilities.

Individuals may be barred from working on the premises of a facility for any of the following:

(1) Conviction of a felony or a crime of violence or of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude.
(2) Falsification of information entered on security screening forms or on other documents submitted to the Department.
(3) Improper conduct once performing on the contract, including criminal, infamous, dishonest, immoral, or notoriously disgraceful conduct or other conduct prejudicial to the Government regardless of whether the conduct directly related to the contract.
(4) Any behavior judged to pose a potential threat to departmental personnel or property.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

There are other convictions that, while they won’t stop you on the spot, will provide more significant barriers to getting hired.

Outside of government jobs, there are other considerations. This company deals with sensitive materials, so cyber crimes, theft or any offense dealing with dishonesty will be a red flag.

Another big one will be violent offenses. These types of crimes are always looked at closely when applying for a job, but Lockheed Martin also requires security clearance for most roles. If that’s the case, this type of record will be a strong barrier.

Does Lockheed Martin hire sex offenders?

While they didn’t tell us directly, we don’t think they do. We haven’t seen any reports about it online, either.

Does Lockheed Martin drug test?

It’s pretty clear that you should expect a drug screen when applying with Lockheed Martin.
