Official company policy for hiring felons

Since we are waiting to hear back from HD Supply anyway, we made it our mission to investigate them thoroughly. We want to provide the answers that are important for any former felon looking for work.

In order to do this, we researched both hdsupply.com and our other online sources. We found several current and former employees with felony convictions that were able to get hired here.

Has HD Supply hired felons in the past?

Yes, we have found several instances where individuals with felony records have been able to get jobs here. It’s a very large company so exactly what felonies are allowable will depend on the position and hiring manager.

Does HD Supply hire people with misdemeanors?

Like individuals with felonies on their records, people with misdemeanors often have a hard time finding a job. This is why we make sure to include them in our fact-finding.

Given that we have found several instances where felony convictions were allowed we can assume that people with misdemeanors will have an even easier time finding a job here. As always, what your conviction was and the flexibility of the hiring manager will vary from case to case.

Will HD Supply hire you with pending charges?

There’s no information online about this, and the company didn’t say. That said, they do hire people with convicted felonies so we’re confident they will.

What are the chances of HD Supply hiring a felon?

Is HD Supply on the Ban the Box list?

Just imagine how great it would be to apply for a job and not have to include your criminal record on the application!

Well, the mission of the Ban the Box campaign is to convince employers to remove these questions from their applications. This group believes that by taking these questions off job applications, the applicant has an equal opportunity to anyone else applying.

Employers dedicated to looking at your work history and skills rather than letting your criminal history decide your eligibility are signing the Fair Chance Business Pledge.

HD Supply doesn’t support either of these initiatives. Don’t let this worry you too much — you can still be hired by a company that isn’t a supporter.

Does HD Supply have special programs for hiring felons?

While these programs are always a plus, HD Supply doesn’t offer any. Just so you know, this isn’t unusual.

Let’s keep reading to look at some pointers for your best chances at being hired here anyway.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?

Average likelihood of hiring felons

So, does HD Supply hire felons? Like we discussed above, HD Supply is probably above average when it comes to their willingness to hire felons. We have confirmation that they have done so in the past and they offer a lot of jobs that are difficult to hire for. That combination makes them a decent option for many with criminal records.

In the meantime, let’s continue on to see what we put together on how to get a job at HD Supply with a felony.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

You may be interested in working here, but maybe it’s been a while since you’ve applied for a job? No problem! We‘re here to help you.

Before getting started with the application, have your resume together. Do you need help with it? If so, look at our guide created to help people with a criminal record make an awesome resume.

We provide some excellent tips, even if your resume just needs some polishing.

You’ll need to show them why you’re the best fit for the job. Your resume is where that starts! Make sure the jobs and experience that best match the position you’re applying for are at the top of your resume.

And, if you need to account for some time between jobs, talk about how you improved yourself. Focus on the positive! For example: That kitchen job you had while incarcerated provided you with experience in loading and unloading trucks. This is experience that should be used when applying for their warehouse job.

Sneaking a peek at their application, we saw that the first section asks you to include your resume and cover letter. So you see? Aren’t you glad you put yours together before? The more information you can provide to make yourself stand out, the better your chances are of being contacted for an interview.

The interview is a very important part of the hiring process. This will be the first direct encounter with your potential employer.

Here are a few reminders:

  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. This shows you’re interested and dependable.
  • Dress appropriately. Nothing too flashy or too casual. A great choice would be something you would pick for church.
  • Smile often and take care to speak well. Don’t have gum or candy in your mouth — this can cause you to speak unclearly.
  • Be the first to break the ice on your background. We already know they will check, so get it out in the open.

Does HD Supply do background checks?

Yes, HD Supply will require a background check.

Here are some things to keep in mind regarding background checks:

If you have an offense that is more than seven years old, there are states that won’t see it! Those states are as follows:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

(*certain pay or salary bracket positions require a screening.)

We also have states that see only guilty convictions. Such as:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

With the good comes the bad. Unfortunately the majority of the states will still look at everything. Here are those states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

Company ratings

Reviewing glassdoor.com, HD Supply is rated with 2.7 out of 5 stars. That’s not exactly a great score . . . let’s see how they got it.

The main thing employees seemed to like about working here was the people they had the opportunity to meet. However, there are a lot of complaints about the long hours worked and the pay not being enough to compensate.

What felonies HD Supply will not hire

There aren’t any listed by the company that would stop you from being hired right away. We did some research to see if there are charges that would cause trouble for you, though, and we find a few. See the next section.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

All former felons fear that their felony will prevent them from being hired. Companies that do hire people with records sometimes still have a few convictions they hesitate to bring on. Let’s take a look at a few we think might make HD Supply pause.

  • Identity, other theft crimes or embezzlement convictions might be a mark against you if you’re applying for a position that handles cash or credit cards.
  • Violent or sexual offenses will more than likely be a red flag. The majority of their positions will include interacting with the public.

Does HD Supply hire sex offenders?

We’re not sure if HD Supply will hire someone with sex offenses on their record, but think these will be hard charges to overcome if they do. Chances are they won’t.

Does HD Supply drug test?

Yes. If you are applying for a job with HD Supply you can expect a drug test. They also perform random drug screens to all of their employees.
