Official company policy for hiring felons

When we contacted Family Dollar to ask if they hire former felons, this was their reply:

“We do not have a policy that bars the hiring of those with past felonies. All are welcome to apply.”

So the short answer is yes, they probably do.

Has Family Dollar hired felons in the past?

According to Family Dollar, everyone is welcome to apply. However, there is one testimony online that says otherwise. You can read it here. Keep in mind that the specifics of your record could keep you from getting the job, but don’t worry — we cover that a little later.

Is Family Dollar on the Ban the Box list?

Ban the Box is an initiative taken by some companies that excludes, on application forms, the box asking whether or not the candidate has a criminal record. Unfortunately, we don’t think Family Dollar is part of Ban the Box. We couldn’t find them on the list.

But, according to a source from 2014:

“Family Dollar, like other big box chains such as Target and Walmart, does not have a felony check box on its applications.”

We didn’t see one, either, so that works for us!

Another great initiative that helps felons find new job opportunities is the Fair Chance Business Pledge. Companies make this to show they’ll offer former offenders job opportunities. We have no reliable sources stating they’re part of this program, either.

Does Family Dollar have special programs for hiring felons?

There’s no record of any other special programs to hire felons here.

Finding a job opportunity on Family Dollar’s careers page is quite easy. You basically have three categories to choose from: Store Careers, Distribution Center Careers and Store Support Careers. How to get hired at Family Dollar with a felony

When you think of getting a job at Family Dollar, the first doubt you will probably have is knowing what they are looking for in an employee. The abilities you will need to score a job there are willingness to learn and great organizational skills. There is no need to have previous formal education to get these skills, your life experiences have already helped you with that. They also look for flexibility in your schedule because they have a lot of different shifts to fill.

If you think Family Dollar is a great spot for you to begin again, then the next step is getting your resume ready.

When preparing your resume, it is essential to take punctuation and grammar seriously. The better your resume reads, the more likely you are to catch the company’s eye. What information do you want them to see first? Something that is in the job description. Show them you have skills matching what the job is asking for.

Think you lack skills? Think again. You’ve learned countless things over the course of your life. Now is when you apply them and make them work for you! Have you ever had to negotiate in a stressful situation (sales and communication skills)? Do you know how to count money (what they call “money handling” skills)? Ever have to keep track of supplies or products (like doing inventory, for example)? You get the idea! Frame your skills positively and they will take you places.

After you go through the resume challenge, it’s time for challenge number two: The interview.

  • Make sure you dress well for the interview. No need to spend hundreds on the clothes, but dress business-casual for the job.
  • Keep your nails and beard trimmed.
  • Be careful with tattoos and piercings as well as augmentations.
  • Certain mannerisms should also be avoided. You can find incredible tips on how to behave during the interview here. It’s a great way to avoid feeling stressed before you go.
