What are the chances of DaVita hiring a Felon?

Is DaVita on the Ban the Box list?

The Ban the Box campaign is a campaign that is working to remove questions about criminal records from applications. Its purpose it to give people a chance based on their skills and not their mistakes.

The Fair Chance Business Pledge is also designed with former offenders in mind. Companies who participate in the Pledge commit to fair hiring practices for all, including people with criminal records.

We could not find anything that suggests DaVita is on the Ban the Box list or participates in The Fair Chance Business Pledge; however, they do not ask about criminal history on their application.

Does DaVita have programs for hiring felons?

Some companies have programs specifically designed for hiring felons. DaVita was not found to be one of these companies.

These programs are really great for those with criminal records. Some programs offer assistance from job skills to substance abuse programs.

For example: Vocational Rehabilitation Services. They assist former felons with work clothing, tools and education. They’ll also assists individual with starting up a business.

These programs provide great opportunities for felons; but remember, just because a company does not offer them does not mean you can’t be hired.

Uncertain likelihood of hiring felons

The odds of a former felon getting hired at DaVita are uncertain. We did not find anything that would prevent a felon from being hired here. We believe it’s possible a qualified former felon would get hired, depending on the job chosen.

Here are a few of their entry-level jobs and what is required for each:

  • Medical Economics Analyst — Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and SQL (a specific language used in certain programs) required, as is a bachelor’s degree and some related experience.

DaVita as you can see, has a wide selection of jobs, each requiring a different set of skills. Now, let’s get to the good part and look at how to get hired at DaVita with a felony.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

DaVita actually provides this answer on their website. DaVita has a section on their website dedicated to assisting applicants in what to expect in their hiring process, the interview and working for them. So, here is how we recommend going about getting a job at DaVita with a felony:

Start by reviewing the section of their website called What to Expect. It is broken down into three categories: You Apply; We Review; and Together, we’re going to get to know each other (the interview).

  • Application — This section lets you know it’s a fairly simple application. It is approximately 11 questions. They love when an applicant answers their question, “What qualifications did we not ask you about that you wish we had considering you for this role?”
  • Assessment — Many of their jobs require a pre-hire assessment. Their website includes a two minute video to prepare you for this part of the process and it also includes tips.
  • Realistic Job Preview Video —  This section provides a video that gives you a day in the life role for the position you are considering. This is to make sure the job you are applying for is a right fit for you.

Before you jump in and start applying all willy-nilly, you need a resume that stands out. Make sure all your skills and any job related experiences are listed. It is very important that your application catches their eye. DaVita specifically says their recruiters only send the best to the hiring manager for review.

From there, be sure you have researched the company and know their core values. DaVita makes it clear that their core values are important to them and they should be to you, too, as an applicant.

Next, be prepared for a behavior-based interview. This type of interview is simply asking you what you have done rather than what will you do. This allows the interviewer to sense how you may react to a similar situation in the future. As a former felon, you definitely need to be prepared for this. Remember, you have to be able to highlight your strengths.

For some of their entry-level jobs you’ll need to have post-secondary education. Any time you’ve worked in an customer service setting — answering phones, customer service, typing — you’ll want to highlight those. These skills go hand-in-hand with what they’re looking for in all their entry-level jobs.

DaVita looks for candidates who have empathy and social skills. Being incarcerated, we have all learned how to deal with all types of personalities. This is where you can use your incarceration to your advantage. You have social skills someone without a felony doesn’t.

Remember that unpleasant bunkie that you had to deal with on a daily basis? Use those abilities, along with your other skills, to sell yourself and to stand out from all the other applicants.

You only get one chance to make a first impression, so make sure all your ducks are in a row. We recommend you practice with a friend to see if there are any areas that need polishing.

Does DaVita do background checks?

Yep, they do. DaVita made it clear that the background check is done pre-employment, as well.

Something to keep in mind regarding background checks:

There are many states that now only look at an offense if it is less than seven years old.

The following are those states:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Kansas
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New York
  • Texas
  • Washington

The eight states below do not look at anything you were not convicted of (they only see guilty verdicts):

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

Unfortunately, there are some states that still look at everything. The following are those states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

Company ratings

DaVita has 1,281 reviews on glassdoor.com, with a rating of 3.3 out of 5 stars. This is a somewhat average score.

DaVita received the majority of their high ratings for the variety of benefits they offer, including tuition reimbursement. However, what seemed to be the largest complaint was the lack of pay or raises, and the difficulty in receiving promotions.

What felonies will DaVita not hire

DaVita didn’t tell us each offense that will cause offense. There are some that will stop you from getting the job, undoubtedly, so read below to get some ideas on which ones.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Since DaVita is in the medical field, some felonies might have a hard time getting a foot in the door. There are a lot of different career paths, so each will have their own requirements.

There are a couple of obvious felonies they might look out for, though. Drug crimes, elder abuse and violent offenses would more than likely draw their attention. Fraud and insurance-related felonies might make them hesitate to give you a chance as well.

Does DaVita hire sex offenders?

This is a question we don’t have enough information about. The company didn’t tell us, and there’s nothing online about it.

Does DaVita drug test?

There will be a drug test given. The drug screen was mentioned on their Medical Economics Analyst application, for example, and they told us they do.
