Official company policy for hiring felons

We contacted Verizon to find out about their hiring policies for former felons.

Unfortunately, we have yet to get a response from them. We will keep trying to make contact in order to better update this article in the future.

However, we did some independent digging to answer the question.

While nothing that we found proves anything about their policies, we were able to get the sense from former employees that they might be open to hiring former felons.

Has Verizon hired felons in the past?

Again, since Verizon has not responded to our requests for information it’s a little bit tricky to say for certain. However, as we did our research we did come across people with felonies who claim to have worked there in the past.

So, from what it looks like, Verizon has hired former felons in the past.

Does Verizon hire people with misdemeanors?

Of course, felonies aren’t the only thing that can make it hard to find work. If you have a misdemeanor, it can also be hard to find job opportunities.

So, does Verizon hire people with misdemeanors? Though we don’t know for sure, it’s safe to say that if they will hire people with felonies, they will hire people with misdemeanors as well.

What are the chances of Verizon hiring a felon?

Are they on the Ban the Box list?

The Ban the Box movement is a nationwide attempt to get questions about criminal records kept off job applications.

The Fair Chance Business Pledge is a similar effort — though,  in this case, businesses voluntarily sign up and promise not to discriminate in their hiring policies.

Unfortunately, Verizon is not involved in either one of them.

Doesn’t sound so good, right? While it would be nice if they were participating in these efforts, there are lots of companies who don’t that will still hire former felons.

Does Verizon have special programs for hiring felons?

Some companies and organizations make specific efforts to help former felons find jobs. These programs are an outstanding opportunity if you can find them, but unfortunately they are also somewhat rare.

Not surprisingly, Verizon does not have any.

Does this mean it won’t be possible to get a job at Verizon with a felony? Hardly. Just like with the Ban the Box movement, there are plenty of companies without official programs for doing so that hire former felons.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired here?

Average likelihood of hiring felons

With the information that we have, we can only say that your chances are uncertain. Statements made by employees online lead us to believe that it’s a possibility, especially if the offense is more than seven years old,. Until we hear from the company directly, it will be hard to have a better idea of how they feel about hiring former felons.

Does Verizon hire felons? It’s very possible that their hiring policies will depend both on what your felony was, and how long ago it happened. Many companies are more lenient about hiring former felons when their record was from many years ago.

How to get hired at Verizon with a felony

What are some entry-level jobs?

Verizon is a big company with lots of different types of employment opportunities. If you have any sort of technical background, you might try for one of their tech support positions, where you can find higher paying entry-level work.

But, there are also plenty of jobs for people with customer service experience. The duties of these employees are to inform customers about phones and service plans, and help them to choose the option that is right for them. Hours will ultimately vary from store to store, but many are open seven days a week and have both day and evening shifts.

How to get hired at Verizon with a felony

You know your odds, you know the jobs. Now it’s time to tackle how to get hired at Verizon with a felony.

Getting hired at this company is going to come down to many of the same factors that are true of any other job.

Everything starts with the application. Carefully read and answer all of their questions, and include a well-written resume.

Resume writing is difficult for pretty much everyone which means that you should never be shy about enlisting a little bit of extra help. Getting a second pair of eyes to critique your resume may help you get the interview. Try a friend, a family member or even a career center.

So, now they’ve gotten your awesome application, and they want to give you an interview. Great!

But before you can don the Verizon uniform, you still need to wow during the interview. That means coming in with confidence, wearing your most professional attire.

Showing up looking good should be relatively simple. Remember to cover up tattoos, remove any piercings, and wear your best clothes. These are expectations the hiring manager will have for any applicant, but meeting them will also make it harder for the interviewer to imagine you in jail.

However, it’s not enough just to look good. You need to demonstrate that you are confident and comfortable in a social environment. That means wowing them with your behavior. Try to be polite and confident, the same way you might act if you actually did work in their store.

Of course, even true extroverts clam up during interviews sometimes. And it’s no wonder. The process doesn’t exactly feel very natural.

If you need a little bit of extra help, try doing a practice interview with a friend. It probably won’t go anything like the real thing, but it might put you in the right state of mind!

Does Verizon do background checks?

Does Verizon do background checks?

How much a company knows about your record can matter a lot. This raises the question: Does Verizon do background checks?

From what we’ve seen, they do.

However, not all background checks are the same. Where you live does make a difference.

In these states, background checks only go back seven years:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

In these states, background checks won’t list not guilty verdicts:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

Unfortunately, though, there are also states that include everything, even not-guilty verdicts. These states include:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Since Verizon has a lot of customer service positions, you may have a hard time getting hired with violent or sexual offenses on your record.

And since many jobs in their stores require the handling of money, theft charges may also prevent you from getting hired.

Does Verizon drug test?

Yes, Verizon will test for drugs before hiring.
