Do you have experience with rural living? If so, you’ve probably considered applying at a local hardware store like Tractor Supply Co (also known as TSC), but wondered: Does Tractor Supply Co hire felons? We wondered this too, so we decided to look into it.

Many of us at Relaunch Pad can relate to the rejection and discouragement you face when looking for a job. You may be thinking this is impossible — but it’s true. See, most of us are former felons! And the rest of us have worked closely with former offenders, so we completely get it. Since we have this inside experience, we use it to make the job hunt process as stress free as possible for you and other former felons.

That’s why Relaunch Pad goes the extra mile and contacts companies directly to ask them about their hiring policies for former felons.

Some of the questions we ask are:

  • Does TSC do background checks?
  • Does TSC hire people with misdemeanors?
  • What is the best approach in applying?
  • Does TSC drug test?

Well let’s get to it and see what we ran across about how to get a job at TSC with a felony.

Official company policy for hiring felons

Good news! We contacted TSC to see what they thought about hiring former felons. This is what they told us directly:

“Having a criminal background or even a felony conviction will not automatically disqualify someone from employment with Tractor Supply Company, as we look at the total picture of the candidate and consider many factors when reviewing a criminal conviction — including the seriousness of the crime, how long it’s been since the crime occurred, and whether the crime is related to the position sought by the candidate. “

Has Tractor Supply Co hired felons in the past?

They told us yes they will! Of course, online responses are mixed due to their statement above. Since you know some felonies are going to hold you back, it’s no surprise some former offenders are turned down.

Does Tractor Supply Co hire people with misdemeanors?

People with misdemeanors have a hard time finding jobs as well. When we checked to see if TSC would hire someone with a misdemeanor, we couldn’t find anything specific. We recommend that you remain positive and still give it a shot!

What are the chances of Tractor Supply Co hiring a felon?

Is Tractor Supply Co on the Ban the Box list?

You’ve never heard of Ban the Box? Well, this is a group that supports former felons trying to get back into the workforce. Their sole purpose is to level the playing field during the hiring process. They urge employers to remove all questions about criminal histories from their applications. These questions are found to take the focus away from the applicant’s abilities and experience.

The Fair Chance Business Pledge is the agreement companies make when they’re on board for practicing these fair hiring policies for all — including those with criminal records.

TSC isn’t a supporter of either of these groups, but they told us they don’t ask about your criminal history on their job applications!

Let’s move ahead to see what we came up with on how to get a job at TSC with a felony.

Does Tractor Supply Co have special programs for hiring felons?

Unfortunately, TSC doesn’t offer any programs specifically for felons. We did notice that they do offer tuition reimbursement, employee assistance and even an adoption assistance program, though.

What are the odds someone with a felony will get hired?

High likelihood of hiring felons

Does TSC hire felons? Your odds are high! They told us that they do and we have seen some confirmation online that they have before. However, as with most companies that hire felons, there are some records that will make you a harder hire. As such, we’ve also seen reports that they didn’t hire someone with a felony. That’s okay! Do your research so you can put your best face forward. We’ve got a few tips on how to get hired at TSC below!

How to get hired at Tractor Supply Co with a felony

What are some entry-level jobs?

TSC is a retail farm and ranch supply store. Most of the positions they offer will require interacting with customers with their purchases and providing product information. This is what an entry-level job will look like:

  • Team Member — These associates are the ones who’re there to make your shopping experience smoother. These employees are the ones who greet you upon arrival and guide you through the store. They help you find that exact brand of dog food or a specific what not you’re looking for. Hard work and heavy lifting will be required in order to stock and assist customers with items such as dog and horse feed.

Remember we told you we had some suggestions to aid you in getting hired? Well, here is what we uncovered that we feel will help you succeed to the interview stage with TSC.

Their application is available online if you can’t  get to a store. If you don’t have access to a computer or internet, here are a few ideas:

  • Your local library allows use of computers and internet for free. Most only require you to have a library card.
  • Ask a friend.
  • Usually places that provide printing services also provide access to computers.
  • Career services will often help you with the application as well as let you apply from their locations.

They’re looking for people who can put away stock and run a cash register. Show them you can do basic math, have a good work ethic and will work whatever shifts they want to give you. Also, if you have any experience with farm or tractor equipment, tell them about it! They want to hire someone who has familiarity with their stock and customers.

When putting your resume together, make sure you’re highlighting any skills or experience you have that directly relate to the job you are applying for.

We created an article to help you with your resume. We even offer advice on how to include your experience from jobs you held while incarcerated.

When preparing for the interview, there are a few things to remember, such as:

  • First impressions are lasting. Make sure you arrive neat and presentable and most of all . . . on time!
  • Bring a couple of extra copies of your resume. It’s always good to provide a hard copy.
  • Remember your manners. An outgoing and polite personality can be enough to get you hired.
  • Be prepared to discuss your background. There’s no sense in hiding it because if they do a background check and you didn’t tell them — it won’t go in your favor.

Does Tractor Supply Co do background checks?

We asked TSC about their background check process as well. They said:

Background checks are conducted on all new hires, regardless of position. The background check is conducted after a conditional offer of employment is extended.

Here are some things to keep in mind regarding background checks:

These states will see it only if the offense is less than seven years old:

  • California
  • Colorado*
  • Kansas*
  • Maryland*
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire*
  • New York*
  • Texas*
  • Washington*

(*certain pay or salary bracket positions require a screening.)

Here are the few states that see only guilty convictions:

  • Alaska
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana (limited check)
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York

And sadly some states will still look at everything. Here are those states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • DC
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Indiana (extensive check)
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

Company ratings

Glassdoor ranks TSC at 3.2 out of 5 stars. The highest marks come from great customers and other team members. However, staffing issues and upper management seem to be the top complaints.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Here’s what the company had to say about the barriers former offenders face applying at TSC:

“Keep in mind that, as a retailer, our Store Team Members interact closely with the public and our customers, and Store positions involve receiving and handling money and credit card information. We have a legitimate interest in loss prevention, preventing theft, ensuring the safety of everyone on our worksites, and in a drug free workplace. The total picture of the candidate is considered to determine if their conviction indicates a risk to our the interests.”

Does Tractor Supply Co drug test?

Unfortunately, this is another question that is still up in the air. Simply put — proceed as if they do.
