Official company policy for hiring felons

As promised, we contacted Spinx to ask if they hire former felons. This was their response:

“No, we currently do not have any programs in place for hiring former offenders. Our backgrounds are graded according to work-related offenses and on a case-to-case basis.”

Has Spinx hired felons in the past?

Online sources don’t say either way. However, in their company statement, Spinx says they’ll hire on a case-by-case basis and depending on the charges.

Does Spinx hire people with misdemeanors?

Because we know Spinx will consider people with felony convictions on an individual basis, so it’s safe to assume they’ll hire those with misdemeanors as well.

Will Spinx hire you with pending charges?

We’re not certain on this one, but if they’ll hire people with convictions, they’ll certainly consider those with pending charges.

Is Spinx on the Ban the Box list?

Ban the Box is a list of companies that have agreed to remove the checkbox asking if you’ve been convicted of a crime from their application. Spinx isn’t on this list. They also haven’t signed the Fair Chance Business Pledge, which is a pledge by companies to look past your criminal history and to hire based on skills, talents and strengths instead.

However, we took some time to fill out their online application, and even though Spinx isn’t on the Ban the Box list, they don’t have the checkbox on their application either.

Does Spinx have special programs for hiring felons?

In their company statement, Spinx says they don’t have any hiring programs for felons.

What are the odds that someone with a felony will get hired?

You have average odds of getting hired at Spinx with a felony. In their company statement, Spinx says they’ll hire on a case-by-case basis, depending on the type of charges. Also, while they’re not on the Ban the Box list, there’s no checkbox asking if you’ve been convicted of a crime on their application. This gives you a decent shot at getting an entry-level position with a misdemeanor or felony.

What are some entry-level jobs?

Customer service is the main entry-level job at Spinx. This position will require you to stock merchandise, clean the store and parking lot, and interact with customers. Getting in at the ground level is a great place to start since Spinx likes to promote from within. They offer all employees a review every six months, giving you the opportunity to earn a raise. Spinx also offers a 401(k) retirement plan, health, dental and vision insurance, and paid vacation time after six months.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

Now that we know you have a pretty good chance of getting hired at Spinx with a felony, how do you apply? First thing’s first. Let’s start by sprucing up your resume to match what Spinx is looking for.

List any experience you have in a convenience store setting and include all responsibilities and job duties. If you have experience stocking shelves, running a cash register or credit card machine, housekeeping, or even cooking food, let them know. This is the type of experience Spinx is looking for.

Also, be sure to mention where you picked up this experience, whether you received special training in prison, at a previous place of employment or if you’re self-taught.

Knowing you want to be prepared for your interview, we put together these tips to help you get hired at Spinx with a felony:

• Arrive 10-15 minutes early. It’s your first chance to make a good impression by showing the company that you can be on-time.
• Dress business casual. While you don’t need a fancy suit and tie, you don’t want to show up for your interview in jeans and a t-shirt. A pair of khakis and a nice shirt for the gentlemen and a skirt or dress pants and blouse for the ladies will work just fine.
• Keep good eye contact throughout the interview. Look the other person in the eyes. It’ll show them you’re paying attention.

Company ratings

We did some research to find out Spinx’s ratings. Glassdoor.com gives them 3.4 out of a possible 5 stars. There were mixed reviews, but many employees spoke highly of the company benefits plan and opportunity for growth. The disadvantage to working at Spinx seems to be the low pay.

What felonies Spinx will not hire

The company didn’t give us any specifics on this, just that it was done on a case-by-case basis.

What felony convictions might have a hard time getting hired here?

Does Spinx hire felons? They do, but on a case-by-case basis. There are some felonies that will make it harder — if not impossible — to get a job at Spinx. Spinx is a convenience store where you’ll be in direct contact with customers, money and merchandise so any charges involving violence, drugs or alcohol, or theft might disqualify you from a position with the company.

Does Spinx hire sex offenders?

Spinx didn’t say. They might, since they assess based on individual circumstances.

Does Spinx drug test?
