Official company policy for hiring felons

As always, we went right to the source and asked the company about their hiring policies.

According to the human resources employee we spoke to, it’s against their protocol to discuss how they make their hiring decisions.

However, we can say for a fact that Best Buy is heavily involved in equal opportunity hiring. They make a point of saying that they will not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, sexual orientation or religious creed.

Though this doesn’t say anything either way about the situation of a former felon, it does seem like a good sign.

Has Best Buy hired felons in the past?

From what we can tell, Best Buy has hired former felons in the past. Naturally, we don’t know the circumstances of those hires, but at the very least this means that your felony shouldn’t completely eliminate your chances of getting an interview.

Does Best Buy hire people with misdemeanors?

It’s also important to find out how a company feels about applicants with misdemeanors. Unfortunately, this is another piece of information that Best Buy wasn’t willing to give us. However, the fact that they’ve hired people with felonies is good for those with misdemeanors.

Usually a company that is willing to hire former felons is also open to hiring people with misdemeanors.

Will Best Buy hire you with pending charges?

The company didn’t tell us specifically if pending charges will hold your resume back, but keep in mind the specifc charge might matter.

Ban the Box is a movement that pushes companies to eliminate questions about criminal records on job applications. The idea is to allow applicants to stand up on their own merits, rather than be judged just on the basis of their previous mistakes.

There is also the Fair Chance Business Pledge. Here, companies promise to actively be fair in their hiring policies.

Best Buy is not actually involved in either of the movements relevant to former felons. However, as we know, they believe in equal opportunity hiring.

This doesn’t sound great, but it’s actually not a huge deal. There are many companies that hire former felons that don’t have any association with these movements.

What are some entry-level jobs?

Now, let’s talk about jobs. A look at their career page shows several different opportunities. You can divide their entry-level jobs into two categories: Warehouse and customer service.

Warehouse jobs are mostly behind-the-scenes. You’ll be unloading trucks, scanning merchandise and other tasks. This work is very physical and may involve hours that extend beyond the store’s hours of operations.

Then there are customer service jobs. These entail helping customers with sales. However, since Best Buy has many departments, actual duties may vary.

Hours will be different from store-to-store, but typically you can expect to find day and night shifts seven days a week.

Tips to get hired here with a felony

Does Best Buy hire felons? Landing a job at Best Buy is going to depend on a good application. You are going to want to spend plenty of time perfecting your resume. You’ll want to tailor it to the job you’re applying for. For example, if you’re applying for customer service and have experience in retail, make sure that stands out on your application.

It can also be to your benefit to get a second pair of eyes on your submission. If you have a friend or family member who’s good with applications, consider asking for their assistance. Career centers are happy to help as needed as well.

Once you submit a good application, it will be time for the interview. For this part of the process, you should show up looking professional. Nice clothes are a must, and it is also a good idea to cover up tattoos and piercings. Best Buy may actually allow those to be displayed by their employees, but for your first impression, it’s a good idea to cover up until you know their policy.

It can be helpful to have a practice interview. In addition to offering resume critiques, some job centers will also offer dummy interviews. If you don’t have access to that resource, you can always sit down with a friend and go over some basic interview questions.

Once you’ve done all the prep work, it’s time to relax. You can do this!
